Topics in the March 2022 Issue

The contents of Issue 101 includes for the Cape, The 1882-83 Seated Hope Issue looks at available proofs, essays and stamps, while the 1883 De La Rue Appendices A,B and C and two Bradbury Wilkinson Hope Essays, present some of the very scarce items which have emanated in recent times from the printers’ archives. The Seated Hope issues endured for 35 years and are doubtless part of most Cape enthusiasts’ collections, however there is still a great deal of information needed on the printings and background details of the stamps, so these articles go some way to redressing the situation.

Natal is the subject of several lines of investigation, firstly a brief look at Durban, its historic seal and coat of arms as well as some postcards which highlight the city’s prominent features, especially the beaches.

Keith Klugman has provided three definitive articles, the first covering the Earliest Recorded Letter in Private Hands to Canada, the second the Recorded Uses of the 1893 Large Natal Postcard lacking UPU Wording and a third, a Newly Discovered Cover which is the Largest Recorded Natal Combination Franking with New Republic Stamps.

Additionally, Keith, Bram Leeflang and Michael Smith have joined forces to prepare The Expanding Discovery of Natal Penny Postcards illustrated with ‘Durban from the Berea’. I have augmented the New Republic article with some further facts about its origins.

The third of the Natal King Edward issues, that of 1908-09, is reviewed in an article by myself, and I have also contributed some information on a Cover sent from Eshowe to Sheffield, uncovering the ‘Duke’s’ Regiment. Last but not least is Part 2 of the Dickson Papers.
