Topics in the December 2021 Issue

The contents of Issue 100 includes the Cape in two articles, both of which are designed to bring the past back to life. More on the Itinerant Pastor of Murraysberg is a follow-up by Manfred Mittelbach and myself, revealing that there were two pastors who lived in different parts of the Cape and who could have been twin brothers, so similar were their achievements (in fact they were cousins although separated by 8 years).

Natal is covered in four articles. Keith Klugman provides an article on the 1869 postage overprint, Type V (Mann) 1/- on a cover. Quite astonishing! Who would have thought one of these would turn up? Next a POA2 with a fascinating letter from Anthony Howgrave-Graham, a hand-painted Dual Country cover, a detailed examination of the Edwardians 1904-09 plus the absolutely gorgeous Colour Trials of 1906-07, presented together for what I believe, is the first time.

Zululand is not forgotten and four unusual and attractive items should pique your appetite.

The Appendix: The Dickson Papers Part I is from a set of important research notes that the late John Dickson prepared and entrusted to me a few years ago. I put them in a ‘safe place’ and then couldn’t find them again until I made a determine effort this week and they re-emerged. These are invaluable! John worked through De La Rue’s archival material and obtained much fresh information on the DLR Day Books and Correspondence Books from 1867 to 1902. These will be published in three parts and are a must-read for anyone who collects DLR Natal.
